RECOMMEND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Windows should always be in the closed and locked position
NEW CONSTRUCTION WINDOWS
NOTE: For proper installation and operation Starlite recommends a minimum of a 4-inch nominal wall thickness.
- CHECK THE SQUARENESS OF THE ROUGH OPENING .( CHECK FIGURE 1 )
Starlite recommends that the rough opening be 1/2” greater than the window buck width and 1/2” greater than the window buck height. Diagonal measurements should not exceed ½”.
- Opening Preparation (check Figure 2).
- When opening is O.S.B or wood sheathing, wrap should be applied first, wrapped around the jambs & still to extend minimum of 6” from perimeter of window frame. On thermo ply applications, window should be sealed around full perimeter taking care not to leave nail openings exposed including all thermo ply seams.
- Prepare the window Apply sealant (AAMA or ANSI approved or equal sealant) to the interior surface of the nailing flange. Sealant should be set to ¼” application or best results.
- Installing the window
Place a ¼” shim at each corner of the bottom sill and at mullions. Place the window in the opening with the flanges tight against the opening. Sashes should be closed and locked. Center the window from top to bottom and side to side.
This will allow the interior trim to be installed without impeding the operation of the window. Square, Plumb, and shim window. Windows exceeding 60” in height, should be shimmed at the center cross rail to insure a plumb jamb. Shims should be firm but not so tight as to bow any components of the window frame.
5. Fastening the window
We recommended using galvanized roofing nails. Nail across the top first (in every other star punch), making sure the window top is level. This procedure will in effect “hang the window “and assures that it is both level and plumb. Re-check the level and plumb, and nail the sides (n every other slot) from the top down. Do not nail the flange tight. Like siding, nailing should be just tight enough to hold the window, but not impede movement of the structure underneath during expansion and contraction.
Replacement Windows
- Carefully remove the inside stop using a wood chisel and save for later use.
- Remove the lower sash by cutting cords or chains and lower weights inside jambs. (Gently). Do not allow weights to fall any further than necessary.
- Pry out intermediate parting stop and discard.
- Remove upper sash in same as lower sash.
- Remove cord pulleys and double check opening for any obstructions that might prevent a clean flush opening.
- Clean entire opening with a brush or vacuum.
Preparing the opening
- Place the head expander on the window.
- Mb and Install sill angel behind the blind stop.
- Set window into opening: check for proper fit, then remove window.
- Caulk inside of blind stops (head and jambs) also caulk where the still meets stool.
- Place window in opening and set firmly against blind stops.
- While holding window tightly against blind stop, install installation screw in pre-drilled holes at the top of each jamb. DO NOT TIGHTEN.
- Option: At this time you can fill the cavity between the window and wood with insulation.
- Plumb and level the window. Raise the lower sash several inches and check that there is equal space between the sash and sill all the way across. Shim where necessary.
- When the window has alignment dips, adjust so that there is equal space on both side, be careful not to bow out jamb.
- Install two lower screws. DO NOT TIGHTEN.
- Check unit for proper operations (up & down, tilt-in, lock, and screen movement): Adjustments can be made by turning installation screws.
- Once a unit operates properly, all screws should be drawn up snug, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
- Raise head expander up, screw into place.
- Caulk inside of window, top and sides where window meets wood.
- Replace all interior trim.
*These are minimum recommended installation criteria. Cosmetic and exterior finishes may affect the overall performance of a structure. Specifications as per the architect/engineer and or local codes must be adhered to for all through wall fenestration. For more detailed and advanced installation applications see our online guide at www.supersealwindows.com
The use of non-compatible cleaning products such as, but not limited to muriatic acid will cause irreputable damage to the structural integrity of vinyl and other window components. Failure to properly protect the window product when applying such agents will void warranties as they apply to effected components.
